In a time where the biggest innovation is the tech world, everyone everywhere is wanting the most powerful and most efficient phones, but there is more than just hardware to phones, what about the OS? Well for phones, there are basically only two choices, iOS or Android. Yes, there is a Harmony OS but we won’t be discussing Harmony OS because we already released a video about that. (show glimpse of video), so let’s get right into iOS and Android.
Greetings!
Greetings, today we will be discussing iOS and Android, we will be discussing the basics of both the Operating Systems. If you want to see more in depth of these go check out our other videos such as, “Everything you need to know about iOS 14”
So you have two choices, iOS or Android, both owned by some of the biggest tech companies in the world, iOS, owned by apple and Android, owned by Google. Currently the most recent iOS is iOS14 and the most current Android is Android 11.
First, iOS
First let’s talk about iOS, what is it? Well iOS is the Operating System for devices from Apple such as iPhones and the iPod touch. Apple also has MacOS and iPadOS but mainly we have iOS. iOS is known for having a very simple atmosphere and I’ll admit, in the time period that I had an iPhone it was really a very simple atmosphere. Everything on the page is aligned into a nice grid placement that goes from the top of the screen down, now this was very nice for apple but at the same time it did cause some complaints, people wanted to be able to organize and personalize their homescreens more than just with wallpapers. With the release of iOS 14 they completely changed all of this when they released their widgets, so now you are able to customize your homescreen the way you would like if you want, or if you really would like you can just keep it the same way. But that’s not all about iOS, the nice thing about iOS is that everything is right at your fingertips, want the flashlight? Just swipe down. Want to silence your phone? Just use the little switch on the side of the phone. Want the personal assistant? Just hold the bottom of the screen or simply say, “Hey Siri”. Every app is on a very nice smooth platform. Apple is obsessed with having smooth lines and curves. Everything on the iOS has a smooth line whereas Google tends to like to mix it up by having really Geometric lines but at some spots having very smooth lines as well.
A well known benefit of iOS though is iMessages. Almost everyone that has used iMessages prefers it over almost any other messaging platform out there including Google Messages, Google Hangouts, Samsung Messages, and most default messaging apps. The benefit of iMessages is that if you are messaging someone else that also has iMessages then you can simply message over WIFI and you can also use Facetime. You have probably heard of Facetime, much like Skype, Zoom or Google Duo you can simply have a video chat that is in a really smooth and simple atmosphere with anyone else that also has an Apple Device. But there is more than just WIFI messaging and Facetime to iMessges, you can use Memoji which are sticker emojis that are even bigger and more detailed, especially designed to look like you. But you can even play messaging games in iMessages, all these features and yet Apple finds a way to keep them all organized in a very simple way, this is why people love iMessges so much.
iOS is just known for their simplicity, if you have ever gone into an iPhones settings and then compared an Android’s Phone’s setting then you instantly see what one would be more simple. On an iPhone you have your General Settings, this is exactly what it sounds like, whereas on an Android you have “Connections,” “Sounds and Vibrations,” “notifications,” “Display,” “Advanced Features,” and more. Now I’m not saying that Android is very complicated but I am saying that they tend to be harder for basic users to navigate through compared to the iPhone.
Another nice thing about iPhones is that they are guaranteed 5-7 years of updates. These are major updates, like the iPhone 6 which came out in 2015 is still being supported by apple in 2020 with iOS 14. That is 5 years of updates so far. If you look at phones from samsung they tend to have 2-3 years of Major updates and about 5 years of basic security updates. This means that if you got a phone that originally had Android 9 on it, it will only get up to like Android 11.
Now, Android
So, let’s talk about Android. We already mentioned that most android phones only get 2-3 years of major updates and then like 5 years of basic security updates, we also talked about how android isn’t as simple as iOS. So what is good about android? Well, naturally, Android is an open source. This is great for developers because then they can develop on android practically without having to pay a lot. This is very similar to linux as it is open source and anyone can help develop on Linux.
So now let’s talk about the interface itself, the thing about android is that it is able to be used by many different companies, if you are using a phone from samsung it will most likely come with samsungs default text messaging app, same goes with other companies like motorola, LG, Xiomi, and One+, and Google themselves, now these are just the main companies that use Android, there are many others. So all of these companies use different default messaging systems so we can’t necessarily talk about the messaging, but if we talk about the one made by Google than that works, the default messaging app made by google called Google Messages allows for WiFi messaging between other Google Messages users as well as it allows you to send GIFS just like any other messaging app. But a feature that is different is that you have what are called messages for web. What you do is you activate this and then you can get on any computer, Mac, chromebook, PC and you can message right from your browser as long as both your phone and computer are connected to the same WiFi. Other than those features you don’t really have all the features that iMessages allows, although on Android Devices you can use Google Duo to do video calls with other users.
What’s really nice about Android is that it is built not for just everyday users but also for Developers. If you are wanting a phone that you can play around with and install a bunch of thing on and program on then picking an android phone is perfect for you, android phones also have app menus that honestly are quite nice to have and if you want you can customize your android phone any way you would like, just go into Google Play, search “launchers” and then a ton of results will pull up, just pick one, press install, and then set it as your default and bam, your entire theme is changed just like that, also on Samsung Phones you can go into the samsung store and pick themes that are specifically built for your phone.
Now another thing about android devices compared to apple devices is that you can find a device that is right in your budget, if you are on the more poor side and can’t buy a big flagship like the new Samsung Note 10 Pro 5G, or even the Samsung A51 5G, then just go to android and you can find a bunch of devices that will work perfectly for you and are around the $100-$200 price range. Also with Android devices, because there are so many different companies you can also get a device that will have the best of the best on it, it could have the best camera, best speakers, best speed, yes this will cost more but you will get better features than any of the iOS devices will have, this is because iOS is only developed by Apple and so apple has to meet in the middle, they can’t make a very low budget phone because than they would miss out on a bunch of buyers, but they can’t make a really expensive phone because then they would miss out on the low budget buyers, and because they usually only come out with 1 or 2 phones they can’t really make one for every field like Samsung is able to.
Last but not least, a very important part is Customer Support. Apple has been known very well for having very good customer support, if you have a question you can simply go to their website, type in the question and you will have someone there to answer it quite quickly. Now this is not to say that other companies have bad Customer Support, because Samsung and Google also have very good customer support but if you have a company that is not that well known compared to other companies like Apple, Samsung or Google then you probably don’t have as high of a chance of being able to get the help you need as fast. Now I realize that this doesn’t necessarily have to do with Android or iOS themselves but I feel that it is very important to be part of a company or take part in a company that has a good support system because this will in the end affect your experience that you have on the OS itself. So if you were going to get an android phone, I would suggest going for a company that is more well known because if you ever run into a problem with the OS you will be very pleased to find out that someone will be there to help you as soon as they can.
What to decide
So when it really comes down to it, if you are in the mid range and you really just want a reliable simple phone, than the iPhone would probably be best for you, I’m not saying that Samsung doesn’t make any like this, because they definitely do, but apple has found a way to connect their devices personally to the user to make them feel like they have the best thing for them. If you have a specific price, or request such as the best phone for gaming than finding an android phone from ASUS or Samsung would be perfect for you, or even if you are a tech nerd and want to find a phone that will work for you but will also allow you to change a few things on it and experiment then finding an android phone will probably be the best choice for you.
We recently released a video that describes everything about iOS 14, so if you want to go back and watch that to find more about iOS 14 than that could help you be more informed,
